This year’s Fall Shop Steward School was a wonderful success!!! We had a full school with over 80 stewards from all over the state in attendance. Nurses, bus drivers, food service workers, office workers, warehouse workers, telecommunications workers, and more all came together for a day and a half of learning, sharing their experiences, and gaining perspective amongst other like-minded Teamsters.
Our first day of School was a full-day starting with the history of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters presented by the IBT’s Historian, Karin Jones. We then had an insightful and interactive presentation on Diversity with Raven Hall, IBT Staff Attorney. In the afternoon we had two different workshops with IBT Leadership Academy trainers, Iliana Flores and Claudia Rowe, focusing on the roles & responsibilities of a steward and member mobilization.
The second day of School was a half-day reserved for special guest presentations. Alaska AFL-CIO President, Joelle Hall opened the morning with an informative PowerPoint regarding the PROAct. We then wrapped up the weekend with a wonderful lecture on building a culture of unionism from labor radio host and Teamster, Rick Smith of the Rick Smith Show.
We look forward to holding our full steward schools every other year and encourage all who are stewards and anyone who is interested in becoming a steward to attend.
