Job DetailsJob Summary: Performs general maintenance and repairs to a variety of heavy equipment utilizing departmental equipment as authorized. Individuals assigned to this classification will operate under the general direction of a Shop Lead and in accordance with established procedures and methods at the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Kodiak, Alaska.

Primary Duties: Performs work assignments on all types of heavy equipment; work is expected to be completed timely and efficiently in accordance with contractual timelines; write accurate and legible Service Reports, read, and comprehend blueprints, technical data, and service manuals; ensure accuracy of work orders by charging parts and labor to proper work order segments; operate construction machinery being repaired and test for performance; must be able to fully test all equipment after servicing and/or repairs; use diagnostic tools and computers to troubleshoot needed repairs; use the internet to research various manufacturers’ electronic manuals, information, and communicate via email; project a positive company image with fellow employees, customers, and management; keep work area clean and orderly; follow all work safety rules and procedures; comply with all Contamination Control procedures; accumulate contaminated dirt and filters in drums. Complete stock transfer and transport full drums by forklift to Hazardous Waste Storage area; work with hazardous waste and attend recurring Hazardous Waste Training; keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies, and systems; maintain any relevant trade certificates; willing to work overtime when needed; successful candidates will be required to own and maintain sufficient hand tools to perform the job as assigned; perform other job duties as directed by management.

Education, Experience, Skills: High school education or G.E.D equivalent preferred; must be able to communicate clearly (oral and written) in the English language; valid Alaska Driver’s License; five (5) years’ experience on diesel heavy equipment sufficient to provide competency in this skill area; valid CDL or ability to gain CDL within 6 months.

Preferred: Manufacturer accredited training (Caterpillar, Case, Pierce, John Deere, or other); ability to operate equipment for snow removal evolution on an as needed.
